Turnitin: Your Partner in Plagiarism Detection

Due to several inquiries about Turnitin's integration with the Canvas platform, we are pleased to present an introductory guide to Turnitin in this newsletter, along with a section of Frequently Asked Questions.

In the context of the digital age, with the popularity of online learning and distance education, it has become essential to ensure the originality of student-submitted assignments and research results. Turnitin is a leading originality-checking tool that can detect plagiarism in student assignments. By integrating with Canvas, instructors can easily embed Turnitin's detection function into the assignment submission process so that students can automatically detect when they submit their assignments.

The integration of Turnitin and Canvas provides instructors with a powerful tool to ensure academic integrity, promote academic transparency, and improve the quality of education. Instructors can use this integration to cultivate responsible and honest students.

User guides & Frequently Asked Questions(FAQ)

Question 1: How to set up Turnitin in Canvas?

Step 1: Go to the login page from the Turnitin official website (The Turnitin login page: https://www.turnitin.com/login_page.asp?err=3400&lang=en_us). Enter Kean's email address, and then click "Forgotten your password? Click here." At this time, Turnitin will send you an email to reset your password. (Since the email account provided by Kean includes access to Turnitin, it can be used directly.)

Step 2: After resetting and logging in, you can view and operate all course content on Canvas.

(Optional) Step 3: Clicking on a course name, you can directly view the homework similarity report of all students in the course provided by Turnitin.

Question 2: How to create assignments under the Turnitin Plagiarism Framework in Canvas

Step 1: On the Canvas interface, navigate to the course where you want to add the assignment, then select the Assignments button. Scroll down to the Plagiarism Review section, then use the Turnitin plagiarism Framework. (If you want to ensure that students submit files in which Turnitin can generate a similarity report, choose Restrict Upload File Types to readable text files such as pdf, doc, docx, ppt, etc.)

Note: This step can be completed directly on Canvas, as logging into Turnitin enables a shared database connection between the platforms.

Step 2: The following [Plagiarism Review] selections are options for most assignments. Please select as needed.

Step 3: Select whether this is a Group Assignment, enable Peer Review, or activate Anonymous Grading.

(If you select to use Group Assignments, all group members will be able to see the Similarity Report even if they did not submit the file themselves.)

Step 4: Assign this to Everyone or Everyone Else to ensure the due date is reflected in Turnitin. Choose a Due Date, Available from date, and an Until date as needed.

Question 3: How to check personal research papers and documents for plagiarism?

Step 1: Click "+ Add Class" to set up a private course to upload papers and materials.

Then, follow the steps in the previous question to set up the plagiarism framework in Canvas or the Turnitin website, as in the following picture.

Step 2: Upload papers and materials that need to be reported as a student role.

Step 3: Return to the page where you can view all students in the course, refresh it, and view the similarity report.

Note: Similarity Reports can only be downloaded individually; therefore, instructors cannot download Similarity Reports in bulk.
